A Gripping Tale of Faith, Love, and Restoration . . .

In 1856, Western Virginia is a hotbed of political, relational, and spiritual tension between slavery and abolition. And in the middle of this hostility sits the small railroad town of Grafton.

When life circumstances relocate Henry Coggs—an artist and poet from the North with a passion for abolition—into this tumultuous city for an art commission, he cannot help wondering if God has bigger plans in mind than stained glass. And, through reuniting with his childhood friend Seth, he comes across a valuable tool that confirms his calling: a printing press.

The pair covertly begin printing abolitionist leaflets as Henry finishes his stained-glass project. While installing the colorful window in the local church, he meets the mayor’s daughter, Eleanor Lockwood. He is immediately captivated by her quest for truth—and her secret friendship with Bethany, one of her parents’ enslaved servants. Henry invites the two women to their secret church, and his relationship with Eleanor blossoms.

But the gravity of their undertaking is realized when an escaped slave shows up at their door, bringing the danger of the Underground Railroad uncomfortably close to home.

With each twist and turn, Between the Shards takes you on a heart-stopping journey as calamity strikes, sending the four friends and their spiritual community reeling from persecution. To survive, they must learn to overcome their fears, heal from emotional wounds, and trust God to put the pieces of their shattered lives back together.
